Pecans are an excellent single food, if rare circumstances required subsistence on such a single food. In fact, it's probably possible to stay healthy during an emergency by eating just: pecans, multivitamin pills, and by drinking adequate water. Consequently, pecans are one of nature's most fantastic nutritional bounties. Pecans taste delicious. Pecans are nutrition that doesn't need cooking or preparation. Who couldn't conclude that pecans are a wonderful food?

Pecans are mostly fat. For anyone interested in a fat focused nutritional regimen, it may be worth it to include pecans, despite the fractional level of carbohydrate that pecans contain. A one (1) cup quantity of pecans (about 99 grams), contains: 71 grams of fat; 14 grams of carbohydrate, of which 10 grams are fiber; and 9 grams of protein. Using the high fat percentage in pecans, the human metabolism is able to convert the fat from pecans into glucose fuel to meet cellular energy requirements as needed. The human metabolic system is able to convert, i.e. biosynthesize, fat into glucose fuel via a metabolic process called gluconeogenesis. Reliance on gluconeogenesis for fuel, instead of eating carbohydrates, can provide multiple, often dramatic, health benefits, first and foremost by reducing the body's insulin requirements.

Technically, pecans aren't truly “nuts” either, even though that's the way people generally classify pecans. Pecans are a type of tree seed that is called a drupe in botany. The seeds from Pecan trees are so fascinating that the official state “nut” of five (5) U.S. states is the pecan!

Pecans might also be the ultimate emergency preparedness food. Consider the fact that pecans are portable. Consider the fact that pecans don't require refrigeration if kept in airtight storage. With that in mind, Pecans are a food worthy of investing in vacuum bag sealer equipment to extend their shelf life.

Some people believe that fiber is an important gastrointestinal health maintenance component. This supposition may be based on the postulate at the gastrointestinal microbiome interacts with fiber in a beneficial manner. If that supposition is true, pecans provide an abundance of fiber while doing so without adding much non-fiber carbohydrate content to one's nutritional regimen. That's ideal.

Whether planning for nutrition during an apocalyptic emergency, or maintaining a traditional Inuit / Aleut / Unangan like, fat and protein based, nutritional regimen, it's easy to conclude that pecans can be a helpful addition to a nutritional regimen focused primarily on eating fats / oils and animal protein.
