Marilyn Perry On The SpaceX Starbase First Starship Integrated Flight Test

On Thursday April 20, 2023, the rocket builders at  SpaceX Starbase conducted their first Starship and Super Heavy Booster orbital rocket Integrated Flight Test (IFT), from the Starbase Rocket Test and Launch Complex in Boca Chica, Texas. Boca Chica, Texas, the site of the Starbase orbital rocket test and launch complex is located on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico just one mile north of the Mexico border.

By successfully lifting off and by clearing the Starbase Orbital Launch Tower (OLT), the first Starship first Integrated Flight Test was a huge success. Although Starbase Mission Control had to use the Flight Termination Systems (FTS) explosives charges on Starship Ship 24 and Super Heavy Booster 7 to blow them to smithereens, this first Starship and Super Heavy Booster flight test was a success. This first ever Starship and Super Heavy Booster test was terminated because the booster and ship pair were not able to complete stage separation.

With many more SpaceX Starship and Super Heavy Booster orbital launches to come over the next decade, leading up to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Crew Starship human space exploration certification, the present and future at SpaceX Starbase is extraordinarily exciting. The ultimate goal of the Starship and Super Heavy Booster rocket development program is to safely launch and return people to and from Mars.
